The Things I Do for Free Tickets

I've heard abt Nuffnang fer quite a while now but never did want to sign up.

UNTIL NOW.

Why? Coz I just CANNOT RESIST FREE things (they're giving away 'Rush Hr 3' tickets, free food, goodie bags...if I write abt the things i do to get free stuff! =P)

No lah, seriously, with so many things on the internet these days, one has no idea (and no time) to sift thru the plethora and myriad of good stuff. So when I first heard abt Nuffnang (I think it was thru some of the ping.sg members' blogs), I just din think much abt it. Then heard more abt it at the Ping.sg anniversary event. Then now thru Sheylara's blog. (maybe I shld also go to Nuffnang's office to 'hound the hell out of the big boss'!)

So...do I get my free tickets now?
Please?

Ya...i wld even post this twice

Soulmate

"Soulmate (or soul mate) is a term sometimes used to designate someone with whom one has a feeling of deep and natural affinity, friendship, love, intimacy, sexuality, and/or compatibility."
Source: Wikipedia

I like Natasha Bedingfield. She's talented (sings and writes).

I mentioned before abt her songs ('single' and 'unwritten'), how they touched my heart with her especially meaningful lyrics accompanied by the right music.

And now, she's got a new song (and my new fave song) aptly titled 'Soulmate' (sigh...frenz wld understand why...)

chk it out!

Edit: Added Music with accompanying scrolling lyrics

More Words from the Nutritionist - Part Two

(This is the second and concluding part to 'A Word From a Nutritionist')

A Guide to Eating Healthy on a Typical Day

Breakfast:

Some of u may haf heard abt the goodness of wholegrains. And contrary to wat u may think, whole grains are absolutely not that difficult to get nor yucky! There are a lot of brands out there now and u can experiment and find one to yer liking. Do know if the bead or food product i.e. cereal has lots of grainy goodness, you only need to read the first couple of ingredients on the label (not the front panel, the actual ingredients label). Grainy breads are one of the best u can get and they are plenty of varieties @NTUC Fairprice, GIANT or Carrefour. You DUN haf to eat them ALL the time but alternating each week with white bread is fine (just look for higher fibre ones, hint: >3 to 5g per 100g)

You might be surprised at how full and satisfied you feel (we call this satiety) , for longer into the day! Eat breakfast like this for just a week, without missing a day, and you'll notice a change in how much you eat at the end of the day!
LESS! Yes, research has shown that late-in-the-day-eaters tend to eat less at the end of the day if they start it out with breakfasts of whole grains!

Note: Most studies on weight loss has cited one common factor - The participants all had breakfast!

Candy and Nuts? Can!

Want some chocs? Handful of nuts? Go ahead! Sure, have what you want! Of course, do indulge once in a while lah

Get your favorite choc (the personal size, not one of those giant things - let's be real!) and make your decision: Eat it all at once, or make it last throughout the day, but you get one a day!

If you want a regular slice of cake (make it no wider than the length of your thumb, no matter how big/small your thumb is), then save the candy bar for the next day.

You get the idea. Be reasonable. MODERATION is the KEY NOT TOTAL ABSTINENCE. Letz be real here.

Oh and the nuts? TWO handfuls a week of walnuts, cashews, almonds (those are ideal) or even peanuts. Don't try to sneak in candy coated or highly salted, oiled kinds....stick to them in their natural (although roasted) state. They got the good fats

Snack Time
- Three Times!

Do include a fruit (vitamins, fibre, antioxidants) each meal, like an orange (Vit C), banana (personal fave)(potassium, fibre) , guava (Vit C), papaya (papain, fibre), apple, a cup of melon and you've hit easily hit Singapore's recommendation of two 'servings' of fruit for the day! How easy is that? BUT I say, why stop there? Go for 5 servings lah! Since we are all so kiasu, go kiasu on fruits lor! Go for a variety of colours...more colours the better. Remember this: EAT A RAINBOW (this includes veggies too)In between lunch and dinner, have a slice of bread or an english muffin spread with a teaspoon of peanut butter, regular spread or jam.
Honestly, a teaspoon will be enough! You'll be surprised at how little it really takes to provide the flavors you like. It's just another step in re-training yourself for life, for health and without giving up those things you like!

Between breakfast and lunch - have an apple or banana with up to a tablespoon of natural peanut butter or butter spread on it. It counts as one more servings for your daily recommended intake of 2 servings of fruit! You are going to surpass this and absolutely glow!!!

Grab an apple - or orange, banana, melon....EAT YOUR FRUIT!

After dinner, if u r feeling peckish, a cup of melon, berries, an orange, apple, banana, a couple of kiwis, cup of grapes, and if you like, 1/2 cup of ice cream (please choose a low fat or no sugar added version), or serving of cheese (a serving of hard cheese like cheddar is about two cubes). . . but don't skip the fruit!

By now - you've past the recommended MINIMUM servings of fruit for the day ! Your skin will be glowing, your hair will grow and shine, you'll be hydrated, you shouldn't crave sweets too much and you'll be pumped up with anti-oxidants!

What to drink?

Having your coffee is just fine, but don't try to get away with those 'frapp' a whipped cream a-things in many coffee joints! These are little more than ice cream sundaes and if you want one once a week for a treat - that's ok lah! But every day? pianz NO!

Also dun think that those diet soft drinks are totally safe! They are wat most nutritionists call empty calories (ok they may be low in energy if itz a diet drink but they displace more nutritious food). Itz simply a waste of space and taste! All soft drinks (whether diet or not) can corrode your teeth (enamel) due to its acidic content (phosphoric acid). Just ask any dentist. Otherwise, opt for water, no sugar or low sugar tea, iced coffee with no or low sugar, fruit juices or ice...even nonfat soy milks of any flavor (1 cup in a blender with 5 ice cubes and a dash of vanilla, cinnamon or nutmeg - well blended - and it's like a milkshake!)

Personally, I drink mainly water and green tea (lots of goodness, will post an entry abt it later)

Lunch & Dinner are going to be similar. A protein serving is about the size of a deck of playing cards, or the size of your fist. Ideally this should be chicken or fish, like salmon; however, a very lean meat is fine too.

Vegetables like a big, giant salad of spinach, or other dark, leafy greens with carrots, tomatoes, hey, if it's green - it's probably good for you.
Don't drench a healthy salad with dressings (some dressings are so fat that they just negate the benefits of the salad). Learn to like it for what it is! A tablespoon of olive or soy oil with splash of wine vinegar, balsamic vinegar, lemon juice, etc. - goes a long way! The secret? Mix it well! The more you toss it, the more it evenly spreads. Put it in a bag or container and gently, frequently shake it! Be sure to enjoy your salad within 30 minutes of putting the dressing on it or it could be all soggy.

Have a slice of whole grain bread - stay away from the diet stuff ok? And itz ok to enjoy the real thing once a while! Or, instead, have a serving of rice (or noodles/pasta) - that's about the size of your palm (and no, you don't include the fingers!). If you're going to put a sauce on anything, learn-learn-learn to like just the flavour, not the amount!
Put aside a little bowl of whatever sauce (except for tomato-based sauces) and try just dipping each forkful in that first and keep trying to make it last for the whole meal. Pretty soon you'll be doing this and having some left over!

So, what fruit are you having with this? Hey! How about a fruit salad of apples, bananas, oranges, grapes and even some melons or pineapples?
You don't need a dressing for this stuff! Or maybe a bunch of strawberries in some nonfat frozen whipped topping?

Learn to like foods the way are - not necessarily the way you've learned to make them taste.

This post is not comprehensive and is just a guide, do consult a nutritionist or dietitian if you got other enquiries and have health conditions (e.g. phosphoric acid not so good fer pple wif renal failure, nor are bananas).

I'm sure u might haf sum questions on your mind, so feel free to ask away. Hope you enjoyed reading this post! I welcome feedbacks and comments. =)

PS: chk out HPB's diet tracker, a free java-based software for your mobile phone where u can key in wat u ate and whether u achieved your daily nutritional requirements or worse, exceeded them!

Guy Love (Scrubs: The Musical Ep)

Edit: Added video

Guy Love (song)

J.D.: Let's face the facts about me and you: A love unspecified.
Though I'm proud to call you, "Chocolate Bear",
The crowd will always talk and stare.
Turk: I feel exactly those feelings too, and that's why I keep them inside.
'Cause this "Bear" can't bear the world's disdain,
And sometimes it's easier to hide.
J.D. and Turk: Than explain our guy love, that's all it is.
Guy love, he's mine, I'm his.
There's nothin' gay about it in our eyes.
Turk: You ask me 'bout this thing we share.
J.D.: And he tenderly replies:
Turk: It's guy love.
J.D. and Turk: Between two guys.
Turk: We're closer than the average man and wife.
J.D.: That's why our matching bracelets say "Turk 'n' J.D."
Turk: You know I'll stick by you for the rest of my life.
J.D.: You're the only man who's ever been inside of me.
Turk (Speaking): Whoa, whoa, I just took out his appendix.
J.D.: There's no need to clarify.
Turk: Oh, no?
J.D.: Just let it grow more and more each day.
It's like I married my best friend.
Turk: But in a totally manly way.
J.D. and Turk: Let's go!
It's guy love, don't compromise the feeling of some other guy,
Holding up your heart into the sky.
J.D.: I'll be there to care through all the lows.
Turk: I'll be there to share the highs.
J.D. and Turk: It's guy love...between two guys.

What Do You Do With The Stuff Your EXs Gave You?!

Have I ever mentioned that 'How I Met Your Mother'(HIMYM) is the most awesome-est sitcom ever (after Friends of course. and Scrubs)

For the uninitiated, HIMYM is an U.S syndicated sitcom abt stories of a bunch of frenz revolving ard Ted Mosby (the protaganist) and his love life. He is seen narrating to his kids telling them a (rather long) story abt How I Met Your Mother.

Season Two just ended (it's awesome btw) and one ep stuck out to me. *spoiler alert!* It was this ep where Ted and his then current GF, Robin were discussing, ok, rather arguing abt what shld be done abt gifts that ex-girlfriends/boyfriends. I was thinking abt my own past relationships and the gifts it came with. Should I chuck them or keep them? The GF was saying that she sees the girlfriends in the gifts whereas us guys simply see the objects as memories of the state they were in (as a NSF, as an Uni student, postgrad days, etc)...

Celebrity Blog Highlight

I am a fan of Felicia Chin and was elated when Chris told me abt her blog.

It's filled with (exclusive) pictures (aplenty!) of her life and many posts directed to her fans.
It's updated (on average) once a week and itz an easy read.
Not very personal of course as itz main purpose proli was a blog for fans.

However, my main highlight is not abt Felicia Chin's blog. It's about this gal called Andrea Fonseka.

For those who dun know, she is better known as Miss Malaysia Universe 2004 (as well as No.10 suitcase gal in Mediacorp's 'Deal or No Deal'). She's also a law student in NUS.
What's better is that she writes a blog that is informative, insightful and an easy read too. She's quite like your average gal-next-door with all the whims of a ordinary gal...no airs at all.
She is intelligent as well as beautiful. Wonder if Ash Rai has a blog too...

And that there's a forum on the subject matter which u can go to find some legal info on your content rights as a blogger. So ya, do check it out. Hopefully this post is a bit more legal-friendly. Somebody tell me if I'm doing it right this time.

I have much to learn abt blogging!

Now fast forward to today, thought Nadal might get his revenge but alas!

Perhaps next year?!

the beautiful, charming and lovely rinaz aka My First Ping Event

I just came back from the ping.sg 1st anniversary par-tay!

(Ok...not JUST came back from there lah, I also went shopping before coming home)

It was great seeing everyone in the flesh (Uzyn: nice friendly dude, Sek Ling: she's so nice and smiley, Rinaz: "the beautiful, charming and lovely rinaz", Veron: I think she's hawt btw!, DK, Daph, BB aka Adam, etc)
btw, CONGRATS to Veron, Eastcoastlife, Keropok man!!! I love your sites!

Though I left earlier (shopping obviously ranked higher...sorry ping.sg! =P), I was glad to have spoken to some (namely, Uzyn and Rinaz only)
It's nice to put a face to those names u see frequently @ping.sg

I must admit that I thought that all I am going to see are like, geeky looking people but I was quite wrong! I kinda also admire the energy and passion in putting down their thoughts online even though many work, study i.e. leading rather busy lives.
SO...How do you guys do it? Blog so much, regular updates, interact with your readers, get so many comments (and answering them), constantly improving the design of your blogs, etc
Pray tell ya?!

A Good Fat in Disguise?

What is stearic acid?

Stearic acid is a saturated (sat) fat that's found mainly in animal products.
Now, most of us know that sat fat is one of the bad fats, another villain being trans fat (the buzz word these days in health).

However, some studies have suggested that stearic fat has little effect on blood cholesterol levels, because such a high proportion is converted to oleic acid (one of the good fats).

NOTE: If you have been diagnosed with hyperlipidemia or hypercholesterolemia (>240mg/dL), please consult a dietitian. This post is meant for those who are healthy and have normal cholesterol levels.

So the question now is, how does one apply this knowledge? As it's also found in some foods like chocolate (ooo..caught your attention there now din I?). This cld mean that eating chocs might be alright for your cholesterol levels.
It's very stable in storage and during frying. A relatively large percentage of stearic acid consumed is converted to oleic acid (a monounsaturated fat). Stearic acid is also found in like steaks and meat, so guys, fear not, not only gals have the chocolate advantage. Ok, now this doesn't mean u have the license to eat an infinite amts of chocs or steaks. IT just means that u MIGHT not have to worry too much abt it affecting your cholesterol levels.
AND...though ur cholesterol might not be affected too much, u wouldn't want your teeth get too affected now wld u (chocs are high in sugar and that rots your teeth!)?

Well, I'd just like to end by saying...like most things, moderation is the key...

How to Lose Weight: A Word from A Nutritionist - Part One

You can enjoy eating!

Some of you may not know this but I am a nutritionist (and food scientist) by training.

I also have some experience writing for the media as well (Men's Health Singapore 2003-2004) and also contributed to magazines like FEMALE magazine. (<-to add some credibility! shameless plug i know...)

Many have asked me abt nutrition questions, however the most popular questions tend to be "eh...how to lose weight ah?" "Wat to eat to lose weight huh?"

No surprises there actually, as most people these days (due to media or otherwise) tend to be rather focussed on how they look.

SO I decided to post this entry calling it 'How to Eat Healthy' (rather then call it "Eat what to lose weight" haha...sorri to deceive u but do read on...)

How to Eat Healthy

(PLEASE note that if u have other medical conditions e.g. renal disease, and u like to lose weight, please see a doctor or a dietitian, they are qualified trained health professionals who studied and trained for years to deal with medical/health conditions!)

FIRSTLY, let's be perfectly clear about this - if any of those weight loss products or plans actually worked - no one would be overweight anymore. And guess wat? It seems the obesity rate is higher then before, yes, despite the plethora of so-called weight loss techniques available today!

Yes - this includes Atkins, Weight Watchers, South Beach, Jean Yip, Mariefrance, all of them!
NO matter what anyone promises you, diets do not work! (remember my blog abt the comic strip Slimderella?)

The old physics still hold - Energy in > Energy out = Weight loss (erm, unless u are sick or your family genes are working against you!)

The true measure of permanent weight loss is whether or not it's still off two years later. If you've ever lost weight on a plan, product or program and are still looking for weight loss options right now, then something didn't work. It's not realli your fault - but if you try to do it again, and again... well, how long until you know better? Stop Dieting! It won't work!

True that some of the programs may have caused some weight loss (mostly water!) BUT the question IS - Is this sustainable long term? Is this healthy in the long run? Can I be not eating my fave Nasi Lemak for the rest of my entire life? Can I not eat more rice ever?! NO MORE Bak Choy Mee?! Unfathomable! Horrors! Unthinkable! IT has to suit your lifestyle somehow to be a lifestyle change

Eating healthy and being healthy is not a fad BUT rather a LIFESTYLE

End of Part One...stay tune fer Part Two

Autobots...Roll Out! (Movie Review)

Transformers is a prime example of Michael Bay's knack in making mega-action films (think Bad Boys or Armageddon).

This children's toy movie is a good vehicle that is a great testament to his ability to bring action to a whole new kick-ass level.
Combine this with the talents of producer Steven Spielberg and we have now a huge summer blockbuster in our hands.

Transformers is simply awesome with no-holds barred action CGI effects.
It is nothing but a thrill ride from the start till the end. At the beginning when the voice of Optimus Prime narrated to give us a background of the Transformers, you can feel the chill running down your spine and you know that this is gonna be an awesome action movie.

There are plenty of laughs and tongue-in-cheek humour (more-than-meets-the-eye one-liners, references to Michael Bay's productions) with cameos (Bernie Mac & funny guy Anthony Anderson) to make sure that this film is not just a no brain actioner. Romance is definitely not quite there as the lovey-dovey scenes were simply too cheesy and cliche.

*Warning: Spoilers!*
At the end when the bad guys were defeated, not every bad guy was accounted for so I would say that this is definitely not the end. The Decepticons will be back, proli with Soundwave and Shockwave the next time.

Oh...I love the cars featured (though I wish good ol' Bumblebee was a Beetle). I remember driving back after the movie, and expecting my radio to 'talk' to me and transform...

Direction: B
Visuals: A+
Plot: B-
Acting: Humans B-, Robots A
Overall Rating: B+

To be continued...

E200? E230? S320? What gives?

[Warning: Long (but informative) Post]
Ever wondered those numbers mean on a car, specifically on one of the world's most famous marques?

What the heck is EJ tokking abt? I'm tokking abt that 3-pointed symbol most pple wld go "Wow! U drive that? cool!"
No NO, not Mitsubishi (not unless u are refering to the hot fast AND furious EVO)
We're tokking abt Mercerdes-Benz lah

Well, here's a little primer on the world of cars...starting with the famous German car maker, Mercedes-Benz.

Mercedes-Benz (or 'Mercz' as we so affectionately call them) was actually a merger of 3 companies (hence the 3 points, also the 3 points meant air, land, and sea)
Karl Benz was da dood who allegedly came up with the world's first automobile.
The German marque was the company responsible with many world's automotive firsts.
Noted examples were
  • ABS (since 1978!!!),
  • Traction control (1986),
  • airbags (1980), Brake assist,
  • pre-tensioners to seat belts on the 1981 S-Class.
In the event of a crash, a pre-tensioner will tighten the belt almost instantaneously, preventing the passenger from jerking
    forward in a crash,
  • The "Safety cage" or "Safety cell" construction with front and rear crumple zones —considered by many as the most important innovation in automobile construction from a safety
standpoint, and now used in nearly all cars and trucks—was first developed by Mercedes-Benz in 1950s and many safety systems and of course luxury stuff!
The UK Dept of Transports has stats that say Mercedes-Benz is 3 times safer than the safest Volvo and BMW 7-series!

Ok, now for the nomenclature (meaning the 'naming of') aka decoding the erm, code
  • In 1994, the prefix reflected the model ("class", German "Klasse", in Mercedes-Benz terminology) and a number for the displacement.
  • The suffix was retained in some cases, for example "L" for long wheelbase, and "CDI" for Diesel (CDI = Common rail Direct Injection). Thus, the E500 means ("E-Klasse", 5 liters displacement).
  • It should also be noted that while in the past the model number generally accurately reflected the actual engine displacement, this is currently not always the case - for example the E200 CDI and E220 CDI actually both have a 2.2 liter displacement, and the C240 actually has a 2.6 litre engine.
  • Also, there is a huge difference in power (and price) between some cars with the same engine number, such as CLK55 and CL55.
  • Supermini: A class (intro in 1998), Entry level: C class (intro in 1993); equivalent to BMW's 3-series, Volvo S60, Lexus IS, Audi A4, Mid-size: E class, CLS; equivalent to BMW's 5-series
  • Full-Size: S (intro in 1970s, the luxury flagship, flagship meaning the largest, most prestigious and representative of the brand) The name "S-Class" derives from the German word "Sonderklasse" for which "S-class" is just an abbreviation.
"Sonderklasse" means "special class", meaning a specially outfitted car, Maybach
  • Roadster: SLK, SL (the 'K' usually means 'Kompressor', think turbo-charged, sort of)
  • Coupe: CLK, CL ('C' meaning 'coupe')
  • Supercar: SLR (hence shld be the fastest and most furious Benz) 0-100 in 3.8s!!!
Jeremy Clarkson has said in a recent Top Gear episode that the Mercedes-Benz S-Class contains technology to be found on other cars in the future. Clarkson states, "If you want to know what toys are going to be fitted in your ordinary family saloon in like 10 years time, there is only one place to look..." "It's more than just
a car, it's a glimpse into the future, it's a showcase of everything that can be done and everything that everyone else will be doing very soon."

How NOT to Lose Weight (aka Slimderella)

Hey peeps

Chk out this blog entry featuring a local dietitian (amongst others). The author was commenting how it is much cheaper (safer and healthier) to go visit your local, friendly neighbourhood, (no lah not Spider-man) dietitian rather than Miss (Jean) Yip, (Mary) Chia or (Jenny) Craig.

On that note, check out this really hilarious comic strip on the local beauty (slimming) industry.

And also check out Today newspaper (Tues 19th June 2007) issue and July's Women's Weekly. my frenz and colleagues Charles and Vanitha are featured! Yours truly is in June's Men's Health p. 92, 93 *shameless plug* =)
